Holy Cross Mercy School uses Jolly Phonics combined with Read Write INC to teach early literacy. The children are taught using a multi-sensory approach. Singing, rhyme, dancing and movement are key to the development of early language. Children are taught to segment and combine sounds in order to develop spelling.

The children read at their own level and are divided into groups in order to make sure they learn to read fluently. The children will follow the Read Write Scheme throughout the school, The scheme then moves to  a combination of Literacy Evolve and Comprehension Plus.
