We at Holy Cross Mercy are running our Active week from Monday 27th May to Friday 31st May

This is a special week this year as we are in the process of renewing our Active Flag which we received for the first time back in 2010.

On Friday we have our annual sports day.  The junior side of the school’s take place in the school and from 1st up to 6thwe use the Dr Crokes Gaa club facilities.

We would love all parents to come and watch  their children at some stage during the day.

The Active School Flag was launched by the Department of Education in 2009.

It is a non-competitive initiative which seeks to recognise schools that strive to achieve a physically active and physically educated school community.

Holy Cross Mercy was the First School in Kerry to be awarded the Active Flag.

In order to be awarded the Active School Flag the school had to

Commit to a process of self evaluation in terms of the PE programmes and physical opportunities that they offer

Plan and implement a series of changes that will enhance PE and extracurricular provision and promote physical activity.

The initiative encourages a partnership approach. It empowers schools to become more proactive in approaching groups like National Governing Bodies, Local Sports Partnerships , the HSE, and Education Centres to help and support them to develop their PE programmes and to promote physical activity.

Each year in May the school runs a week of activities that includes all the children in different activities e.g. Football, dance, golf, hip-hop, soccer and basketball to name but a few. Volunteers from various sporting bodies offer their services during the week to allow the children to experience a wide variety of activities.
